A Fireman's Prayer (어느 소방관의 기도)

A Fireman's Prayer

 

When I am called to duty, God
Whenever flames may rage
Give me the strength to save some life
Whatever be its age

 

Help me to embrace a little child
Before it's too late
Or some older person
From the horror of that fate

 

Enable me to be alert
And hear the weakest shout
And quickly and efficiently
To put the fire out

 

I want to fill my calling
And give the best in me
To guard my neighbor
And protect his property

 

And if according to your will
I have to lose my life
Please bless with your protecting hand
My children and my wife

 

"어느 소방관의 기도"는 1958년 미국의 소방관 스모키 린(A.W.Smokey Linn)이 출동한 현장에서 세 명의 어린아이를 구출하지 못한 채 돌아온 후 책상에 앉아 쓴 시로 이후 '소방관의 복무 신조'처럼 읽히고 있다.
